the Zen of CSS design cover In this book, authors Dave Shea and Molly E. Holzschlag cover various aspects of web design analyzing different submissions to the CSS Zen Garden and providing incredibly useful tips and development patterns.
It’s divided in 6 sections each one covering an aspect of web design by studying six real web designs.
The sections are: Design, Layout, Imagery, Typography, Special Effects and Reconstruction.

It is not a technical book, so you’d be better off with something else if you know absolutely nothing about CSS and XHTML.
But it still can be very helpful even if you know just a little bit of CSS.
So, if you’re a CSS expert, this book will provide you with very interesting tricks to develop more effective websites.
Instead, if you’re just starting to learn CSS and XHMTL it will help you master them with a hands-on approach.

Not coming from a graphic-background, I found it very helpful in learning some basics about graphic design, too.
Things such as colors, layout and fonts are not that obvious for a programmer like me. But usually, programmers think they can design a nice-looking website simply because they can master CSS and XHTML…I say no! We, the programmers, should do some research before starting to design websites. And this book might be of great help.
