Remote backup solution
I’m in the market for a remote backup solution, possibly something that is easily integrated with Mac OS X’s Finder, which probably restrict my choices to what? only WebDAV?
During the past few months, a lot of file hosting services were launched, some are good, others are terrible, but what they all seem to have in common is reliance on a browser-only interface or at most a proprietary app, which makes them somewhat unusable for my purpose.
Actually, my favorite file hosting service, Box.net, used to offer WebDAV, but it was never officially supported and in the past 4 to 6 weeks, their WebDAV server seems to be having a lot of issues.
I love Box.net’s service, I really do and they are my file hosting service of choice. They have the best interface around: it’s extremely simple, no AJAX-overload and it works perfectly in Safari (I use OmniWeb ;) ), and they also used to sport perfect WebDAV support through SSL. Unfortunately, now WebDAV is having hiccups (SSL even stopped working).
While I wait for Box.net to fix their issues (I don’t even know if they will at all), I decided to have a look around.
I found a couple of good file hosting services, neither of which supported WebDAV (let alone being usable in Safari).
So I thought I’d never manage to find a solution and was almost ready to give up.
But then I had an idea (actually two):
- Dreamhost brags about giving away a lot of disk space and bandwidth for a very low price. And they do support WebDAV.
So I guess I’ll give it a try, but if they’re WebDAV service is as good as anything else on Dreamhost, I guess I’ll leave that place pretty soon. - I’m currently using Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (a.k.a. S3) on two projects (one of which being 16bugs) and so far it’s been a wonderful ride. Plus, it’s insanely cheap.
If you throw in JungleDisk, it might prove a very effective solution.
Have you got any other ideas?
Keep in mind I do backups to an external disk and remote hosting would be needed just as an extra security measure for valuable (but not private) files.

Sounds like we’re both thinking of the same things right now. Count me in on helping figure out this subject. Over at No One’s Listening we are searching for a good backup solution for both the website and each author’s individual computer (Mac and XP mix). I will keep you posted on any ideas. S3 looked good a little while back.

I’ll let you know if I find out anything interesting. :)
What do you mean by S3 looked good a little while back? That you tried it and didn’t like it, or that you still have to try it?

I was just doing some research on options and did some math on how much it would cost to use S3. Quite economical. I hadn’t heard of JungleDisk, so that will be interesting to check out. In short, still need to try it out :)

There’s S3 Backup that I develop. It’s S3 based and unlike others it’s a backup solution not just an file storage. It’s multiplatform, but only Win version is in the public beta, Mac and UNIX are private. Have a look.

Sergey,
When you’ve got a beta ready for Mac, let me know. If there’s anything I can do to help you out, I will - be it private or public beta… I will be testing multiple personal computers and servers. And, I will be documenting the results on The Apple Blog so it should help you get the word out. Cheers!
