Try being lactose intolerant... this wasn't even a choice, it's my body being difficult!! Can't eat cheese, butter, milk, sour cream, cream, etc.

The other thing I don't get is how people cant make cakes or even bread without dairy. Haven't they heard of olive oil??

Being a vegetarian is a little more widely publicised and known compared to being lactose inolerant. It's amazing how many times I get, "Can you eat eggs, meat?" when I explain that lactose intolerance is not being able to eat dairy - like hellooooo, don't people know what constitutes a dairy product!! lol

Because my intolerance is so bad, I cannot sit next to someone eating a creamy sauce as I feel like throwing up!! No-one in my family has this problem 'cept for lucky li'l ole me... So I can totally sympathise with you feeling like you're causing an inconvenience to someone that wants to invite you for dinner, as they have to try to accommodate your dietary requirements.

And then at weddings and other social functions - the need to arrange the food in advance is a pain.... and sometimes they get it wrong...

Then there is the ordering at restaurants and having to return food because it has some dairy stuff in it, because I can smell it!

And you thought life was hard for a vegetarian!! lol ;)

@ softminder: it seems a bit exagerated reaction, but some vegs really can't stand it, so I can understand it. Still, it would be better to always be polite and cool about this -- on both sides. :)

I have had a bad experience with a veg. I have invited him and his wife to a dinner. I have tried to order everything I thought they can eat. Somehow a dish I have ordered was cooked with beef in that particular restaurant which is different than other places. He has mentioned earlier that he will not mind other eat meat in front of him, so I have eaten that dish alone and infront of him, but that dinner turned out to be a very unhappy event, as he really pissed off. If I knew he might be offended I could have just ignored or put away that dish. The problem is he did not tell the truth and later on I also became very upset. I think being veg is no thing wrong, it may sounds starange to some people but there is no thing bad about it , therefore veg people must state clearly about their "type" so others will treat them accordingly.

I've never had a problem. However, during the first year, my uncle bar-be-qued me a slow smoked piece of ham, because he didn't know, and I always loved his ham, the look on his face was depressing. But I told him it smelled good. Now everytime we go to his house, he has fresh squash, corn, and potatoes roasted in his bar-be-que pit.

My mom loves setting aside a bit of all her signature holiday meals before the beef/chicken stock goes in. She would even clip and save the labels from products I would buy while visiting. Then when I visit again - much to my surprise - the fridge would be stocked with the same items waiting for me to consume them.

I visited a friend in Stockholm, he warned his mom, and to my surprise, the entire family ate vegetarian that night. They loved it and raved about all the types of things they don't normally have.

So as you can see, my experience being vegetarian is completely opposite! Of course, I've been a vegetarian for like 8 years, so maybe it gets better with time.

Yes, she should be back to her normal veg schdule by now. I know she'd feel guilty if she didn't!

@ ruzz: sure enough it's a soy steak, right? ;)

@ Jess: hehe...tell your friend she's a sell out. :)
Come on, neglecting your ethics for $60?!

But is she now back to her normal veg schedule?
