Ever been ripped? check!
I thought I was immune — probably due to my designs being not good enough. I was wrong.
Someone ripped the design of this website. Blinkoreen was ripped — the oreen part to be precise, and only the header with its graphics.
I won’t tell you who ripped it, since the page looks more like a test page and I’m waiting for the ripper to reply to my email.
What I’m going to tell you, instead, is how I found out about it and what I think about it.
The Discovery
It was fairly easy: the link on the logo was still pointing to this website, so I was able to find the website between my referrers.
And the author actually sent me an email a few days ago asking about the font I was using in the logo. He had to make a logo for his new website. Hey, BTW, nice work on your new logo! ;)
Note to self: when ripping a design make sure:
- you take away all links back to the original website
- If possible don’t send an email to the author of the design asking for the font used in the logo
My Thoughts
I’m not very upset — if at all. Maybe I’m even a bit flattered: I take it as a compliment — am I in need of some attention? Maybe… ;)
I think the Web is for sharing, thus I have no problem giving my code away. But not the graphics.
As modestly and poorly designed my graphics are, I still think they are part of the brand of the website. Otherwise, I’d be using some pre-designed template for my blog.
And that’s, mostly, why the Creative Commons license is in place.
Want the HTML and/or the CSS? Go ahead, get it. There’s nothing special about it.
The images? Nope.
The Web is about sharing, not about ripping off.
And now for something different
I know updates were far from regular — let alone frequent –, but that’s because I’m heading towards longer and better thought out entries, rather than frequent one-liners — this is an “issue” that would probably need a post of its own because I have a few opinions on it.
I have a long list of topics to write about — and some are pretty hot, like religions, love, etc.
And my thoughts are there on my VoodooPad. I simply need the time to put raw thoughts into structured posts — mid-terms, 16bugs, another secret project, Noted and also trying to have a life don’t help. ;)
P.S.
While writing this post I received a reply from the owner of the incriminated page.
It seems he was just testing and even offered some work.
Still, the post will remain, because, even if only for a few hours, I was ripped. :D
Oh, and as I said, it was never a big deal, anyway.

Yeah, I’ve had it happen a couple times. I really just laugh it off as it is not hurting anyone (including myself). If they want to rip a design, that’s fine - it’s the idea which spawned the design that’s valuable.

So far, it hasn’t happened to me yet. I guess that’s because I have been using pre-designed themes and just applying personalized modifications. It’s good that you take this as a compliment, instead of being angry. BTW, take easy on yourself, once awhile give yourself a break. Happy Friday!

I like the way you’ve taken it :-)

I guess taking it easy is the best way to go in these situations. And it proved successful given the “ripper” revealed not to — supposedly — be such and the “offending” page was immediately took offline. :)

[...] People have ripped my layouts before, it happened to Michele the other week, and now it’s happened to me again. The difference here is that these sites have been inspired only by certain parts of my layouts. Usually I’d go nuts and bring on the cursing but this time I’m not sure if I even want to. [...]
