Gay Marriages
2005.07.04A few days ago, Spain voted to allow gay couples to get married, and to let them adopt children. And Giorgio Martini wrote a post about this — sorry, it’s in Italian.
Since it was something on my “To Blog” list, I decided to say what I think with my own post, instead of replying to his post.
I think allowing gay people to get married is something that must be done, unless you live in an uncivilized country!
They are people like everyone else, so why shouldn’t they be allowed to get married? not allowing it is pure discrimination!
And I think allowing them to adopt children is good, too.
I know many people who’d say “Yes, let them get married, but please, don’t allow them to adopt a child!”. Why not?
I mean, are straight couples any better than gay couples? I don’t think so. Actually, the latter are even better than some straight couples.
Would you prefer a baby to be raised by an oppressed mother and a homophobic father, or by two caring mothers/fathers? I’d choose the second.
And please, don’t tell me a baby needs a mother and a father! What about single parents? Are babies raised by single parents any worse than babies raised by normal families? Not really!
And usually, in gay couples you can always find one who’s more feminine and one who’s more masculine: so you have some kind of balance.
What I hope now, is that Italy — because I’m Italian — and all the other countries will allow all of this. Not doing it is, as a said, pure discrimination!
Unfortunately, for as long as there will be a conservative-masked-as-moderate-rightish government we won’t get it in Italy. And the States won’t get it anytime soon since I don’t think Bush would allow it. What a shame…

Although I’m not a gay, I’m for gay marriages too. These people have every right as we are to live together. Child adoption of gay couple is not an issue because abuse are also being made even by some real parents.

The couple shouldn’t adobt the child for their own good, but rather for the child’s good, imagine the grief a kid would get with two homosexual parents, not something I would of liked to grow up with.

Would have preferred dying of hunger or AIDS in Africa or in some other third-world country?

@ SteveC: as Giorgio said, I don’t think it would have been a problem if your other choice was starvation.
I also think, if you grew up in such a family, it’d wouldn’t have been a problem for you: because for you, it’d have been something normal.
But I know this is a very controversial issue, so it’s right that everyone has her/his own opinion.

Erm, I’ve never known anyone to adobt kids from Africa or other third world contries, aren’t most adopted kids from social welfare?
Correct me if I’m wrong. But yes, I would rather have gay parents than starve to death.

In my experience (I’m italian) most aren’t. Africa is obviously not the only “source”; for example, a friend of mine has Brasilian origins.

You question one-parent families. Actually, statistically, children from single-parent households are worse off in many ways when compared to children from two-parent households. This counts for many countries (as divergent as China and the United States). Your opinion about gay marriage and adoption is as valid as anyone else’s opinion, since it is just that. It is important, though, in any debate to use accurate information….if not, your argument becomes shaky at best.

I am totally in favor of same-sex marriages! I believe that same-sex couples are just like everyone else, and deserve equality just like everyone else. I am from south Texas and I just recently heard of a case that was very overwhelming for me. the Lawrence v. Texas(2003). In this case two men were arrested for having sex in their own apartment! Even though this is no longer happening i was overwhelmed with the fact that this law ever existed.

I support gay marraiges 100% even though I am not gay myself. One of the main arguments that people have against gay marraiges is because of the Bible and what it dictates. Yes, the same book that accepts slavery. People were ignorant about slavery in the past, is history repeating itself?

hey guys, i’m doing a report on gay marraige in school.
i am totally for gay marriage. if two people are in love let them get married, who cares if they are two boys two girls.but adopting is another issue… if i was put into a lesbion or gay person family i honestly dont know what i would do. i would have no problem with it of corse, but what about at school? think of how the child would get made fun of…think of how very agaisnt gay marriage people would judge your kid. i know one thing though. i hate being judged. people have to get to know me before they sya anything about me. all-well. honestly i think thye should let the issue go, let them have their own lives, but anyways, if anyone has any good arguingpoints that i could bring up in my paper, feel free to give them to mee:)
thanks for reading. please post back

I am doing a speech for school on gay marriages. I think this website is wonderfull. I am not gay myself, but i think that Gay Marriages should be allowed all over the world. There is nothing wrong with it. And with people saying that gay couples cant raise children? thats a bunch of crap. Because alot of children now-days are raised by single parents and you odnt see people wining about that!! And also, i dont see why alot of the strait community is making such a big deal out of it, i mean why would it affect them? They need to start worrying about themselves and not the gay and lesbian community. Its also really unfair because heterosexuals get to marry and homosexuals cant. If you love a person, nothing should be able to stop you from sharing your love with them. And how the government is trying to stop this makes me really mad, because its their job to make the people happy, well they arent doing a good job of it, because a large majority of the people are homosexuals and they arent getting what they want by not being able to marry their loved one. Anyways, the point im getting to is, if you love somebody, nobody whould stop you from expressing it by getting married.

My uncle was gay, and he died due to complications with AIDS. unfortunately, there is a high occurence of HIV in homosexuals. If the marital union between two homosexuals was made legal, the HIV virus would not infecct as many people since homosexuals would be more likely to have one partner, and also would have the opportunity to be tested for HIV befofre marraige. I never got to know my uncle, and ironically the one gift he has ever given me was a Bible, the one book that so many “christians” use to take away rights from homosexuals. He said that one day I would understand…and I do.
