TV: index of dumbness?
2005.01.19This is something I’ve always asked myself: can TV shows be used as a meter to see how dumb a nation is?
I don’t know if this is the same in other countries - though I’ve seen truly stupid shows outside Italy, too -, but Italian TV is full of stupid shows. And almost everyday it’s filled with new ones.
I used to watch enough TV, but in the last 2/3 years, I’ve been watching very little of it. And almost everytime I watch it, I wonder how can so many people enjoy it.
I don’t want to sound snob, but this are the facts: it’s veeeery difficult to find enjoyable TV shows. And almost impossible to find intelligent ones!
That’s why I think that TV is an index of stupidity: if so many people watch it, and most of it is made of stupid shows, thus a good part - and I want to make this clear: not everybody, but still the most - of the audience isn’t, say, smart.
And the worst thing are those TV shows that pretend to be higly cultural shows, while they’re not. They’re not intelligent shows, they’re crap.
But this is just my opinion. What do you think about this?

I know what you mean hear Michele. In the “states” we have nothing on television anymore except for “reality” shows. I have a hard grasping that term “reality” when it is displayed on television. There is nothing “real” about these shows at all in my eyes. You cannot put someone if front of a camera and expect them to be themselves. But that is a whole different subject.
I do agree though that television shows these days seems like a bunch of crap.

“Reality” shows are the cream of the crap!
And you’re absolutely right: they’re everything but “real”. Maybe we should call them fakality shows… ;)

I totally agree with everyone above. The only channel that I usually find something enjoyable to watch is “Discovery Channel”. I’m a fan of shows like “Myth Busters”. Anything that has a little bit of intelligence to it is better than all that network garbage that gets thrown at us. I’m not even sure why I have cable…??

I couldn’t agree more. Although there are some very interesting, intelligent programmes (mostly documentaries) on television here (England), the large majority of stuff broadcasted is pure rubbish.

I just sent you a ping, but basically I agree with you, albeit in a more general way. Rather than just an index of stupidity, I think they are great indicators of the current mental maturity of America:

Absolutely right. I was simply riding momentum for this particular period of history.
I think that decadence in TV shows - which is what the majority of developed countries’ citizens watch - is a clear index of general decadence in other contexts.
But it would have been the same if TVs were filled with shows presented by people like Stephen Hawking…which, unfortunately, isn’t the case.
