Eating “Out”
2005.01.03To me, it seems like Italians don’t have much respect of people eating in a different way. With “different way”, I mean people, for example, allergic to nuts, or vegetarians.
I knew this, but as I’m now in the UK, I’m realizing it more: when you buy something - or you just see it in a store - you can tell if it’s suitable for vegetarians by simply looking for a green “V” or something like that. When you go to a restaurant, you can know if what you’re about to eat is suitable for people allergic to nuts by reading the bottom of the menu.
I don’t know how many people allergic to nuts are there - but I guess many - and I can tell for sure that there are a lot of vegetarians/vegans, but in Italy nobody puts a “V” to tell that a dish is good for vegs, or writes that they use nuts in the kitchen so the meal might contain traces of nuts.
Maybe this may sound stupid, but I guess it is a big problem.
It doesn’t matter how many people eating differently live in a country, you have to respect them!

As a matter of fact, they don’t (we don’t, I should say) and that “V” I find on packages when I’m in England is truly appreciated, being a vegetarian myself.

I truly appreciate it, too. I think they - or we - are sometimes a little “uncivilized”…
