In my personal view, it is always best to read the book and then watch the movie. Because when you watch the movie first you are infiltrated with the movies perception of the characters and therefore when you read the book, you only see the movie characters maybe not the characters the book was discussing at all. So, as a general rule you should always read the books before you watch the movies. I have found I still enjoy watching the movies even though they are different then the books.

The movie is great, but I thought the book was amazing. And even though the movie is very close to the book, I think there are many little things in which it differs.
That's why, overall I'm very happy I'd read the book before I watched the movie.

In general, it might be a good choice to read the book before watching the movie, because you'll have some kind of man on the inside experience when you watch the movie. :)

For Fight Club...it doesn't really matter what you do first because they are so similar. With a lot of books turned movies a lot of the details are left out, and the movie is lacking in much of its novel counter-part's depth. In Fight Club however, there are only a few slight changes, that do not really take away from the story line at all. I read the book first, then watched the movie. Personally, at least for this book/movie, I think that this is the best way to do it. Simply because the book is amazing, and then you can watch the movie as a grand finalle to get a picture of the books events.
