Stem cell debate
2004.09.30I’ve just found an interesting article on Weird - it’s really short and easy to understand ;) - about the stem cell debate.
I think all over the world people - lets say scientists and governments - are talking about this. And all over the world religious and anti-abortion - well, this is a repetition :D - groups are arguing that using stem cell is immoral and is an omicide: I don’t think a blastocyst is a human being, but that’s my opinion.
This raises another issue: sometimes religious groups pretend that their way is the only good one. I mean they would like policies to be crafted on their opinions. Simply not doable, at least if a nation pretend to be lay. Why? because their are free to do - or not do - whatever they want, but others have to be free, too.
An example, a hot issue in Italy these days, is artificial insemination: a few months ago the Italian parliament passed a law which ban artificial insamination for single-women and couples (just straight couples) which are not married or proved to have been engaged for a while, ban use of spermatozoa or ova from outside the couple, impose to implant 3 (or 4, I don’t remember) embryos even if founded to have problems, exceeding embryos can’t be freezed and, once a woman decide to do artificial insemination and embryos are ready, she can’t come back. Awesome! I know there are groups which opposes this, but they can’t impose their decision to the whole country. They must have respect of others free will.
