More global authorities
This morning I was reading NewScientist (11 September 2004 issue) and I found an interesting article titled “Think global, act global”.
What it says is that we all know that nowadays governments have to handle issues that are too big for them. The article used, as example, cybercrime, climate change and SARS. The problem is that even if a nation makes a decision on a subject, there will always be another nation where that subject is not a problem. For example, you can’t buy human organs in Italy, but if you can afford them you can buy them in India or Turkey.
What we need is an higher level of authority. We need global authorithies that can impose their decision on the whole world. This might be a little scary, because on some issues, Nations won’t have any control. We don’t need authorities were each government tell its opinion. We need authorities were decision are taken by judges and experts based on internnational laws. Anyway, I don’t think we’ll see this kind of authority soon, because nations are not willing to have no control on such important issues. I think that’s the bad choice. We can’t resolve a problem, for example, such as pollution if to the whole world isn’t imposed a strong change in policies.
Pollution, as global warming, cybercrime, etc. is a global issue. Thus not solvable in a local context.
